Washington Learner's Permit

In Washington, if you're less than 16 years old, you must have had your instruction permit for at least 4 months and be within 60 days of your 16th birthday. Your Learner's License is considered Stage 1 of the Washington Graduated License Law. You must successfully complete a driver education course, which includes 30 hours of classroom study, 6 hours of behind the wheel training. You must present proof of completion of 50 hours of driving experience, including 10 hours at night, which you gained while a licensed driver with at least five years of licensed driving experience supervised you. All new drivers are also required to take a Road Rules and Road Signs written knowledge test which contains questions on Washington traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, the new driver is eligible to take their road skills test to receive an Intermediate Driver License.

Washington Road Test Requirements

The road test will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Your ability to drive your vehicle safely in a variety of traffic situations will be tested. A Washington driver license examiner will administer the road test; however you will need to supply your own vehicle. Remember...before taking you out on the road the examiner will check to see if the car you are driving has a current registration and proof of vehicle insurance. The examiner will check the overall vehicle's condition prior to the driving test.

You'll be prepared to perform the following maneuvers during your road test:

  • Proper Signaling for lane change and parking

Scheduling Your Road Test Appointment

You may contact your local Washington DOL office by phone to schedule a road test. Bring the following with you:

  • Proof of Identification to apply for a Washington License
  • Drivers Education Certificate of Completion

If you don't pass the driving test:

  • The 1st time, you can take it again after 1 week.
  • The 2nd time, you can take it again after 1-3 weeks, depending on your test results.
  • The 3rd time, you can try again after 3 months. You will then be allowed to take the test up to 3 more times.

Washington GDL Laws

Washington has a comprehensive graduated driver license system that helps reduce teen driver crashes, injuries and fatalities. This is to gradually introduce driving to new drivers help them develop their driving skills.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner's permit. The required holding period for a learner's permit is 6 months. The licensee must complete 50 hours of driving time, 10 of which should be done at night to be eligible for a restricted license.

Stage 2: Intermediate License

The licensee must be at least 16 years and 6 months old to qualify for an intermediate license. The nighttime restriction for the intermediate license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of 1 AM to 5 AM. For the first 6 months, the licensee is not allowed to have passengers under the age of 20. For the next 6 months, the licensee is not allowed to have more than 3 passengers under the age of 20.

Stage 3: Full License

In order to remove the nighttime and passenger restriction, the licensee must be 17 years old.
