Utah Learner's Permit

In Utah, you must be at least 15 years old to receive your learners permit. Your learner's license is considered Stage 1 of the Utah Graduated License Law and requires a minimum of 40 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel driving practice (10 of which must be at night). All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Utah traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your learners license for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you turn 16 years of age.

Utah Road Test Requirements

The road test will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Your ability to drive your vehicle safely in a variety of traffic situations will be tested. A Utah driver license examiner will administer the road test and you will need to supply your own vehicle. Before taking you out on the road the examiner will check to see if the car you are driving has a current registration and proof of vehicle insurance. The examiner will check the overall vehicle's condition prior to the driving test.

Utah GDL Laws

Utah's graduated driver license program is a three-phase program that gradually introduces drivers under the age of 18 into driving situations that are progressively harder than that of the last phase. With each phase comes a different set of restrictions and requirements to be followed.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner's permit. The required holding period for a learner's permit is 6 months. The licensee must complete 40 hours of driving time, 10 of which should be for nighttime driving.

Stage 2: Intermediate License

Before applying for an intermediate license, the driver must be at least 16 years old. The nighttime restriction for an intermediate license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 5 AM. For the first 6 months, the licensee is not allowed to have any passengers.

Stage 3: Unrestricted/Regular License

The nighttime driving restrictions for Utah may be removed at the age of 17 years, while the passenger restriction is lifted at age of 16 years and 6 months old.

If an applicant is 17 years of age or younger when they apply for their learner permit, they must hold the learner permit for six months before applying for a driver license.

"My parents thought I needed more practice before I went to get my driver's license, so they registered me for this prep course. I was so thankful because I didn't realize all of the questions I'd be asked just to get my license. I passed my first try because of the course."
