Texas Learner's Permit

In Texas, you must be at least 15 years old to receive your learners permit. Your learner's license is considered Stage 1 of the Texas Graduated License Law and requires a minimum of 20 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel driving practice (10 of which must be at night). All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Texas traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your learners license for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you turn 16 years of age.

Texas Road Test Requirements

The road test will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Your ability to drive your vehicle safely in a variety of traffic situations will be tested. A Texas driver license examiner will administer the road test and you will need to supply your own vehicle. Before taking you out on the road the examiner will check to see if the car you are driving has a current registration and proof of vehicle insurance. The examiner will check the overall vehicle's condition prior to the driving test.

Texas GDL Laws

The Texas graduated driver license law is a three-step program that gradually introduces novice drivers into driving via a three-step licensing program towards a full license. This helps reduce the number of teens getting involved in accidents.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to apply for a learner’s permit. The required holding period for a learner’s permit is 6 months. The licensee must complete 20 hours of driving time, 10 of which should be done at night to be eligible for a probationary license.

Stage 2: Provisional License

Before applying for a provisional license, the driver must be at least 16 years old. The nighttime restriction for a provisional license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 5 AM. The licensee cannot have more than one passenger under the age of 21.

Stage 3: Full License

Nighttime driving and passenger restrictions are to be lifted when the licensee reaches the age of 17.

"My parents thought I needed more practice before I went to get my driver's license, so they registered me for this prep course. I was so thankful because I didn't realize all of the questions I'd be asked just to get my license. I passed my first try because of the course."
