Tennessee Learner's Permit

In Tennessee, you must be at least 15 years old to receive your learners permit. Your learner's license is considered Stage 1 of the Tennessee Graduated License Law and requires a minimum of 50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel driving practice, 10 of which should be at night. All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Tennessee traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your learners license for 6 months you are eligible to take your road test when you turn 16 years of age.

Tennessee Road Test Requirements

To qualify for an Intermediate License, you must at least 16, have 180 days of supervised driving experience from your permit issue date and provide verification from a parent, legal guardian or licensed driving instructor stating you have fifty hours (ten hours at night) of driving experience. Certification of driving experience must be made on the official form (SF- 1256) provided by the Department of Safety before making your road test appointment.

The road test will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Your ability to drive your vehicle safely in a variety of traffic situations will be tested. A Tennessee driver license examiner will administer the road test and you will need to supply your own vehicle. Before taking you out on the road the examiner will check to see if the car you are driving has a current registration and proof of vehicle insurance.

Tennessee GDL Laws

Tennessee's graduated driver license law is a three-step program that reduces the risk while new drivers under the age of 18 gradually work up to driving safely on their own.

Stage 1: Instruction Permit

A new driver must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner's permit. The required holding period for a learner's permit is 6 months. The licensee must complete 50 hours of driving time, 10 of which is for nighttime driving.

Stage 2: Restricted License

The licensee must be at least 16 years old to qualify for a restricted license. The nighttime restriction for a restricted license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of 10 PM to 6 AM. The licensee is not allowed to have more than one passenger at a time.

Stage 3: Full License

In order to get full driving privileges in Tennessee for removing nighttime driving and passenger restrictions, the applicant must be at least 17 years old.

Learner's permit holders in Tennessee may not drive from 10 pm to 6 am.

"I really did learn the road rules and road signs, so when I got to the DMV it was so much easier than I thought it would be. Every time I logged in I received random questions and it provided me the answers with an explanation. It certainly helped me!"
