In Rhode Island, you must be at least 16 years old and pass an accredited thirty-three (33) hour classroom driver education class to get a Limited Instruction Permit. All new drivers are required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Rhode Island traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. Your Junior Learner's Permit is considered Level 1 and requires a minimum of 50 hours of supervised behind the wheel practice, 10 of which must be at night. At Level 2, the new driver is eligible to take their road skills test to receive a Limited Provisional License at age 16 years and 6 months.

Rhode Island Road Test Requirements

The road test will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Your ability to drive your vehicle safely in a variety of traffic situations will be tested. An Rhode Island driver license examiner will administer the road test and you will need to supply your own vehicle. Don't forget...the examiner will check to see if the car you are driving has a current registration and proof of vehicle insurance. The examiner will check the overall vehicle's condition prior to the driving test.

You'll be prepared to perform the following maneuvers during your road test:

  • Perform safe Left and Right Turns, as well as Three Point Turns
  • Proper Signaling for lane change and parking
  • Lane Usage, Right-of-way, Intersection Approach and Overall Vehicle Control
  • Backing of vehicle and making quick stops
  • Parking of the Vehicle (possibly Parallel Parking)

Driver's License Documentation Requirements

Before you head to the Rhode Island DMV Office, make sure you have all of the following required documents to get your driver's license. You will need:

  • Proof of active insurance
  • A vehicle registered in Rhode Island (with a valid RI inspection sticker and two (2) valid registration plates)
  • The owner of the vehicle or a notarized letter from the owner giving permission for you to use the vehicle
  • A parent, legal guardian, or instructor who qualifies as a supervising driver;
  • $10.00 cash, check or money order
  • Certificate of 50 hours of practice driving (10 of those hours at night) signed by a parent or guardian

Scheduling Your Road Test Appointment

Road test appointments should be made at the time you receive your permit. You can schedule an appointment at any DMV Branch location. If you fail the road test, you must reschedule your test and take it again.

Rhode Island GDL Laws

Rhode Island has a comprehensive graduated driver license system that helps reduce teen driver crashes, injuries and fatalities. This is to gradually introduce driving to new drivers help them develop their driving skills.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner's permit. The required holding period for a learner’s permit is 6 months. The licensee must complete 50 hours of driving time, 10 of which should be done at night to be eligible for a restricted license.

Stage 2: Restricted License

The licensee must be at least 16 years and 6 months old to qualify for a restricted license. The nighttime restriction for the provisional license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of 1 AM to 5 AM. For the first 12 months, the licensee is not allowed to have more than 1 passenger under the age of 21.

Stage 3: Unrestricted/Regular License

In order to get full driving privileges in Rhode Island for removing nighttime driving and passenger restrictions, the applicant must be at least 17 years old.
