Oregon Learner's Permit

In Oregon, you must be at least 15 years old to get a Instruction Permit. All new drivers are required to take a Road Rules and Road Signs written knowledge test which contains questions on Oregon traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. To qualify for a Provisional License, you must be at least 16 years old. You must have had at least 50 hours of supervised driving experience and have taken an ODOT approved traffic safety education course. If you did not attend an ODOT approved safety education course, you must at least 100 hours of supervised driving experience by someone who is at least 21 years of age and has had a driver's license for at least three years.

Oregon Road Test Requirements

The road test will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Your ability to drive your vehicle safely in a variety of traffic situations will be tested. An Oregon driver license examiner will administer the road test and you will need to supply your own vehicle. Don't forget...the examiner will check to see if the car you are driving has a current registration and proof of vehicle insurance.

You'll be prepared to perform the following maneuvers during your road test:

  • Perform safe Left and Right Turns, as well as Three Point Turns
  • Proper Signaling for lane change and parking
  • Lane Usage, Right-of-way, Intersection Approach and Overall Vehicle Control
  • Backing of vehicle and making quick stops
  • Parking of the Vehicle (possibly Parallel Parking)

Driver's License Documentation Requirements

Before you head to the Oregon DOT Office, make sure you have all of the following required documents to get your driver's license. You will need:

  • Proof of ID and Residency
  • Proof of 50 hours of supervised driving practice and
  • A certificate showing you have passed an approved driver safety education course.
    Or
  • Proof of 100 hours of supervised driving practice
  • Proof of school enrollment, completion or exemption

Scheduling Your Road Test Appointment

You can contact the Oregon Department of Transportation to schedule your road skills test. Appointments can be made in advance with specific DMV office locations.

If you are under 18 years of age and happen to fail the test you must wait 28 days after each failure to retake the test.

Oregon GDL Laws

Oregon has a comprehensive graduated driver license system that helps reduce teen driver crashes, injuries and fatalities. This is to gradually introduce driving to new drivers help them develop their driving skills.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner's permit. The licensee must complete 50 hours of driving time, 100 if the licensee has not yet taken driver education.

Stage 2: Intermediate License

Before applying for an intermediate license, the driver must be at least 16 years old. The nighttime restriction for an intermediate license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 5 AM. For the first 6 months, the licensee isn't allowed to have more one than passengers under the age of 20, for the second 6 months, the licensee may not have more than 3 passengers under the age of 20.

Stage 3: Full License

In order to get full driving privileges in Oregon for removing nighttime driving and passenger restrictions, the applicant must be at least 17 years old.
