In New Mexico, you must be 15 years old to get your learners permit. Your learner's license is considered Stage 1 of the New Mexico Graduated License Law and requires a minimum of 50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel driving practice (10 of which must be at night). All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on New Mexico traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your learners license for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you turn 15 years and 6 months years of age.

In order for New Mexico teen drivers to get a full unrestricted driver's license, they have to undergo New Mexico's Graduated Driver License program, which consists of three phases.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner's permit. The required holding period for a learner's permit is 6 months. The licensee must complete 50 hours of driving time, 10 of which should be done at night to be eligible for a provisional license.

Stage 2: Provisional License

The licensee must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to qualify for a provisional license. The nighttime restriction for the provisional license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 5 AM. The licensee is not allowed to have more than 1 passenger under the age of 21.

Stage 3: Unrestricted/Regular License

In order to remove the nighttime and passenger restriction, the licensee must be 17 years old --- 18 if the licensee did not undergo driver education.

During the learner's permit phase, the licensee must drive with an adult who is 21 years or older and has been licensed for a minimum of 3 years.

"What I liked about the course was I was able to visualize the driving test. I was still nervous, but I knew what the driving examiner was looking for and it really helped with my confidence. I don't think I would have passed my first time with out this course."
