In New Jersey, you must be 16 years old to receive your learners permit. Your learner's license is considered Stage 1 of the New Jersey Graduated License Law. All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on New Jersey traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your learners license for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you turn 17 years of age.

New Jersey Road Test Requirements

The road test will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Your ability to drive your vehicle safely in a variety of traffic situations will be tested. On the actual road test, a MVC (Motor Vehicle Commission) examiner will ride with the applicant when he/she drives in an off-road test area or on a public road course. The purpose of the road test is to make sure that the applicant understands the rules of the road and can drive safely. If the applicant’s vehicle has a standard transmission, the examiner will ask the applicant to demonstrate his/her ability to correctly shift gears.

A new driver must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner's permit. The required holding period for a learner's permit is 6 months. The vehicle must have a reflector decal on both front and back license plate. Only one passenger is allowed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Stage 2: Probationary License

Before applying for a probationary license, the driver must be at least 17 years old. The nighttime restriction for a probationary license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of 11 PM to 5 AM. The licensee must practice unsupervised driving for at least a year. Only one passenger is allowed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Stage 3: Basic Driver's License

In order to get a basic driver’s license in New Jersey, the licensee must be at least 18 years old and must have completed the 1 year unsupervised driving period.
