Nevada Learner's Permit

In Nevada, you must be 15 years and 6 months to receive your learners permit. Your learner's license is considered Stage 1 of the Nevada Graduated License Law and requires a minimum of 50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel driving practice (10 must be at night). All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Nevada traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your learners license for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you turn 16 years of age.

Nevada Road Test Requirements

You must have completed a Driver Education Course, if one is located within 30 miles of you or if you can take the course on line. The 15 hour course can be completed through a licensed professional driving school or through a public or private high school. If you are not able to attend a Driver Education Course, you must certify that you have received at least 100 hours of supervised driving practice, 10 of which must be in complete darkness.

The road test will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Your ability to drive your vehicle safely in a variety of traffic situations will be tested. A Nevada DMV driver license examiner will administer the road test and you will need to supply your own vehicle. Before taking you out on the road the examiner will check to see if the car you are driving has a current registration and proof of vehicle insurance.

Nevada GDL Laws

Nevada's graduated driver license law is a three-step program that reduces the risk while new drivers under the age of 18 gradually develop the skills to drive safely on their own.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to apply for a learner’s permit. The required holding period for a learner's permit is 6 months. The licensee must complete 50 hours of driving time, 10 of which should be for nighttime driving.

Stage 2: Restricted License

Before applying for an intermediate license, the driver must be at least 16 years old. The nighttime restriction for an intermediate license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of 10 PM to 5 AM. For the first 6 months, the licensee isn’t allowed to have passengers under the age of 18. (Secondary enforcement)

Stage 3: Full License

Nighttime driving restrictions are to be lifted when the licensee reaches the age of 18. Passenger restrictions are lifted at the age of 16 years and 6 months.

"My parents thought I needed more practice before I went to get my driver's license, so they registered me for this prep course. I was so thankful because I didn't realize all of the questions I'd be asked just to get my license. I passed my first try because of the course."
