Nebraska Learner's Permit

In Nebraska, you must be 15 years old to receive your learners permit. Your Learners Permit is considered Stage 1 of the Nebraska Graduated License Law and requires successful completion of an approved driver education course. You must complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 for nighttime driving) to be eligible for Stage 2, which is the Provisional Operator's Permit. All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Nebraska traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your Learner's Permit for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you are at least 16 years of age.

Nebraska GDL Laws

Nebraska's graduated driver license law is a three-step program that reduces the risk while new drivers under the age of 18 gradually work up to driving safely on their own.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner’s permit. The required holding period for a learner’s permit is 6 months. The licensee must complete 50 hours of driving time, 10 of which should be done at night to be eligible for a provisional operator's permit. (None required if the licensee has taken driver education.)

Stage 2: Provisional Operator's Permit

Before applying for a provisional operator’s permit, the driver must be at least 16 years old. The nighttime restriction for an intermediate license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 6 AM. (Secondary enforcement) For the first 6 months, the licensee isn’t allowed to have no more than one passenger under the age of 19.

Stage 3: Full License

Nighttime driving restrictions are to be lifted when the licensee reaches the age of 17. Passenger restrictions are lifted at the age of 17 years and 11 months.

Applicants for School Permit must have held a learner’s permit for 2 months before they are eligible to apply. A School Permit authorizes the holder to drive a motor vehicle, moped or motorcycle to and from where he or she attends school by the most direct and accessible route by the nearest highway from the place of residence.
