Massachusetts Learner's Permit

In Massachusetts, you must be 16 years of age to receive your learners permit. Your Learner's Permit is considered Stage 1 of the Massachusetts Graduated License Law and requires successful completion of an approved driver education course. You must complete 40 hours of supervised driving in order to be eligible for Stage 2, which is the Junior Operator's License. All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Massachusetts traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your Learner’s Permit for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you are at least 16 years and 6 months of age.

Massachusetts GDL Laws

The Massachusetts Graduated Driver License law is a three-stage licensing system for new drivers that are designed to lower the involvement of teen drivers in vehicular accidents. The three stages of that system are the following:

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A licensee must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Massachusetts learner's permit. The holding period for the permit is 6 months. During this time, the licensee must complete 40 hours of supervised driving.

Stage 2:Junior Operator's License

The minimum age for a junior operator's license is 16 years and 6 months old. The nighttime restriction during this phase is not being allowed to drive between the hours of 12:30 AM to 5 AM. For the first 6 months, the licensee is not allowed to have unrelated passengers under the age of 18 in the vehicle.

Stage 3: Full License

Passenger restrictions are lifted once the licensee reaches the age of 17 years old. The nighttime driving restrictions are lifted at the age of 18.

Parental consent is required for learner's permit applicants under 18.

"What I liked about the course was I was able to visualize the driving test. I was still nervous, but I knew what the driving examiner was looking for and it really helped with my confidence. I don't think I would have passed my first time with out this course."
