Connecticut GDL Laws

In Connecticut, there are three stages for a new driver --- as per their graduated driver's license laws --- to follow. Outlined below are the three stages and what it entails.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner's permit. The licensee must hold the permit for a minimum of 6 months, 4 months if the licensee has already taken driver's education. During this period, the licensee must complete 40 hours of supervised driving.

Stage 2: Restricted License

The minimum age for getting a restricted license is 16 years and 4 months. The nighttime driving restriction applies for the hours between 11 PM and 5 AM. For the first 6 months, the licensee is not allowed to drive with passengers except for parents or driving instructors. For the following 6 months, they are allowed to drive with parents, driving instructors or immediate family.

Stage 3: Unrestricted/Regular License

When the licensee turns 17 years and 4 months old, the passenger restriction is lifted. When the licensee turns 18, nighttime driving restrictions are removed.
