Ohio Learner's Permit

In Ohio, you must be 15 years and 6 months to get a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). After you have held your TIPIC for one year, you are eligible to take your road test. Your TIPIC is considered Level 1 of the Ohio Graduated License Law. All new drivers are required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Ohio traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Level 2, the new driver is eligible to take their road skills test to receive a Probationary Driver's license.

You must present a certificate showing you have passed a driver education course consisting of 24 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of driving with a certified instructor before you can take the test for a probationary license. The TIPIC holder must also complete 50 hours of driving with at least 10 hours at night. The 50 hours must be certified by a parent (Fifty Hour Affidavit - BMV 5791). These hours are in addition to the driver education requirement.

Ohio Road Test Requirements

The road test will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Your ability to drive your vehicle safely in a variety of traffic situations will be tested. An Ohio DPS driver license examiner will administer the road test and you will need to supply your own vehicle. Before taking you out on the road the examiner will check to see if the car you are driving has a current registration and proof of vehicle insurance.

Ohio GDL Laws

Ohio's graduated driver license law is a three-step program that gradually introduces novice drivers into driving via a three-step licensing program towards a full license. This helps reduce the number of teens getting involved in accidents.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to apply for a learner's permit. The required holding period for a learner's permit is 6 months. The licensee must complete 50 hours of driving time, 10 of which should be done at night to be eligible for a probationary license.

Stage 2: Probationary License

Before applying for a probationary license, the driver must be at least 16 years old. The nighttime restriction for a probationary license is not being allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 6 AM for 16 year olds and 1 AM to 5 AM for 17 year olds. The licensee cannot have more than one passenger.

Stage 3: Full License

Nighttime driving restrictions are to be lifted when the licensee reaches the age of 18. Passenger restrictions are lifted at the age of 17 years old.

"What I liked about the course was I was able to visualize the driving test. I was still nervous, but I knew what the driving examiner was looking for and it really helped with my confidence. I don't think I would have passed my first time with out this course."
