Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A new driver must be at least 14 years old to apply for a learner's permit. The required holding period for a learner's permit is 6 months.

Stage 2: Full License

The minimum age for getting a license in North Dakota is 16.

The minimum driving age in North Dakota is 16. A licensee may not drive in North Dakota if they are under 16, even if they are licensed in another state. However, a North Dakota resident can obtain a restricted license at the age of 14. A parent or legal guardian must sign for a minor under the age of 18 to be issued a permit or license.
