Maryland Learner's Permit

In Maryland, you must be 15 years and 9 months to get your learners permit. Your Learner's Permit is considered Stage 1 of the Maryland Graduated License Law and requires successful completion of an approved driver education course. You must complete 60 hours of supervised driving (10 for nighttime driving) in order to be eligible for Stage 2, which is the Provisional License. All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Maryland traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your Learner's Permit for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you are at least 16 years and 6 months of age.

Since Maryland's revision of their Graduated Driver License laws, the state has seen a decline in fatal teen accidents. There are three stages for novice drivers to get through to get to a full license.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A licensee must be at least 15 years and 9 months old to apply for a Maryland learner's permit. The holding period for the permit is 9 months. During this time, the licensee must complete 60 hours of supervised driving --- 10 of which should be done at night.

Stage 2: Provisional License

Before applying for a provisional license, the driver must be at least 16 years old. The nighttime restriction for a provisional license holder is not being allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 6 AM. The number of allowed passenger for this stage is 1. The licensee must hold the restricted license for a period of 6 months before applying for an unrestricted license.

Stage 3: Full License

Passenger restrictions are lifted once the licensee reaches the age of 16 years and 11 months. The nighttime driving restrictions are lifted at the age of 18.

For applicants under 16, Learner's Permit School Attendance Certification form is required.
