Indiana Learner's Permit

In Indiana, you must be at least 15 years old to get your learner's permit. Your Learner's Permit is considered Stage 1 of the Indiana Graduated License Law and requires successful completion of an approved driver education course. You must complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 for nighttime driving) in order to be eligible for Stage 2, which is the Probationary License. All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Indiana traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. At Stage 2, after you have held your Learner's Permit for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you are at least 16 years and 6 months of age.

  • Perform safe Left and Right Turns, as well as Three Point Turns
  • Proper Signaling for lane change and parking
  • Lane Usage, Right-of-way, Intersection Approach and Overall Vehicle Control
  • Backing of vehicle and making quick stops

Indiana GDL

Indiana has recently changed their Graduated Driver License program which prolongs holding periods before a new driver can progress to the next licensing stage. This is done in order to better prepare new drivers before they are given full license permissions.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A licensee must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to apply for an Indiana learner's permit. The learner's permit must be held for a period of 6 months. During this time, the licensee must complete 50 hours of supervised driving --- 10 of which should be done at night.

Stage 2: Probationary License

The minimum age for a probationary license is 16 years and 6 months old. Without driver education, the minimum age for a probationary license is 16 years and 9 months. The nighttime restriction during Sundays-Thursdays is from the hours of 11 PM to 5 AM, while for Fridays-Saturdays are from the hours of 1 AM to 5 AM. For the first 12 months, the licensee is not allowed to have more than one passenger under the age of 20.

Stage 3: Unrestricted License

Passenger restrictions are removed at the age of 17, (17 years and 3 months without driver education) while nighttime driving restrictions are lifted from the age of 18.

If a licensee holds a learner's permit and is enrolled in an approved driver education program, they may only practice driving only after they begin an approved driver education program. If the licensee is between the ages of 16-18 and is not enrolled in a driver education program, they may practice driving with a learner's permit only when a parent, guardian, step-parent or other relative who is 21 years of age or older and has their valid driver's license with them is seated in the vehicle's front passenger seat. If the licensee is 18 years old or older, they may practice driving with a learner's permit only when an individual with their valid driver's license in their possession is seated in the vehicle's front passenger seat.

"I really did learn the road rules and road signs, so when I got to the DMV it was so much easier than I thought it would be. Every time I logged in I received random questions and it provided me the answers with an explanation. It certainly helped me!"
