Georgia Learner's Permit

In Georgia, you must be at least 15 years old to get your learner's permit. All new drivers are also required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Georgia traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. Your Learner's Permit is considered Stage 1 of the Georgia Graduated License Law and requires successful completion of an approved driver education course. You must complete 40 hours of supervised driving (6 for nighttime driving) in order to be eligible for Stage 2, which is the Restricted License. At Stage 2, when you are at least 16 years of age, you are eligible to take the road skills test to receive a Full License.

Georgia GDL

In 1997, to keep younger drivers safe on the road, Georgia enacted the Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act (TADRA) which includes their Graduated Driver's License laws. In 2007, they have enacted Joshua's Law, which is a new requirement for teen drivers who are aged 16. It states that in order to qualify for a driver's license, 16-year olds must complete a state-approved driver education course.

Stage 1: Learner's Permit

A licensee must be at least 15 years old to apply for a Georgia learner's permit. The learner's permit must be held for a period of 12 months. During this period, the licensee must complete 40 hours of supervised driving --- 6 of which should be for nighttime driving.

Stage 2: Restricted License

The minimum age for a restricted license is 16 years old, and the nighttime restriction for this age is not being allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 6 AM. For the first 6 months, the licensee is not allowed to have passengers. For the following 6 months, they are allowed to have only one passenger under the age of 21. After that, they are allowed up to 3 passengers.

Stage 3: Full License

Both the nighttime driving and passenger restrictions are lifted after the licensee turns 18 years old.

During the Learner's Permit stage, the licensee must always be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and seated in the front passenger seat.

"I really did learn the road rules and road signs, so when I got to the DMV it was so much easier than I thought it would be. Every time I logged in I received random questions and it provided me the answers with an explanation. It certainly helped me!"
