Alaska Instruction Permit

In Alaska, you must be at least 14 years old to get your learners permit (instruction permit). All first time drivers are required to take a written Road Rules and Road Signs knowledge test which contains questions on Alaska traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. Your permit is considered Stage 1 of the Alaska Provisional License Law and requires a minimum of 40 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel practice, 10 of which must be nighttime supervised driving. After you have held your instructional permit for six months you are eligible to take your road test when you turn 16 years of age for your Provisional License.

Alaska GDL Laws

As of 2005, Alaska has revised its GDL rules via the Provisional Licensing law. The provisional license is the first step to getting on the road in Alaska with a full license.

Here are the steps for a new driver in order to get a full driver's license.

Stage 1: Instruction Permit

A new driver must be at least 14 years old to apply for an instruction permit. In order to be eligible for a provisional license, the driver must hold the permit for a minimum of 6 months of supervised driving. The required supervising passenger must have been licensed for at least a year and is at least 21 years of age or older. That driver must complete 40 hours of driving time, 10 of which are for nighttime driving.

Stage 2: Provisional License

Before applying for a provisional license, the driver must be at least 16 years old. The nighttime restriction for a provisional license holder is not being allowed to drive between the hours of 1 AM to 5 AM. For the first 6 months of driving, a provisional license holder is not allowed to have passengers under the age of 21, except siblings.

Stage 3: Full License

In order to get full driving privileges in Alaska for removing nighttime driving and passenger restrictions, the applicant must be at least 16 years and 6 months old.

If the applicant is 19-20 years of age, the permit will expire 90 days after the driver's 21st birthday. The permit can only be renewed once, so careful driving is important for new drivers.
